Specific diets and food fads touted to address the latest health concerns (e.g. weight loss, longevity, cancer prevention) more often don’t resolve critical nutritional concerns.
Regardless of the specific diet or food the following 6 foundational, highly nutritious foods will overcome most dietary deficiencies or inherent problems due to the latest diet. I would even consider these 6 foods as super foods due to the fact that alone or in combination they provide a wide range of critical nutrients.
I personally attempt to incorporate every one of these at least 3 times each week.
Avocados are even recognized by the FDA as a superfood due to their high monounsaturated fat content. Avocados also contain significant levels of carotenoids, fatty acids, vitamins A, C, B, E and K plus many important minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphorous, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Avocados protect against heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes and obesity.
Blueberries contain high levels of antioxidants, fiber and vitamins but are low in sugar and calories. They are important to treat or prevent obesity, diabetes and periodontal disease (gum disease). Blueberries also appear to be critical for preventing cognitive decline.
These are the healthiest nut for the most health issues. Obesity, heart health, and type 2 diabetes are all responsive to the nutrients in almonds.
Beans provide a high level of building blocks (amino acids) for making proteins and DNA /RNA. Beans are also high in fiber and provide probiotics for gut health.
Salmon, especially wild Pacific Salmon, are important to decrease inflammation especially for a healthy heart, eyes, skin and brain health. Salmon is rich in vitamin D (immune health), omega 3 essential fatty acids and carotenoids.
- Sauerkraut or other fermented vegetables-
This is the best of the fermented vegetables which are an incredible source of probiotics and prebiotics to recolonize the healthy gut. Gut bacteria is critical for the health of all other body systems and without probiotics there can be no gut health.
Probiotics travel from the gut to the brain to assist in its protection.
Sauerkraut has a high concentration of different bacterial strains for overall gut health.
I would recommend that if you desire optimal health, are not strict with your nutrition or have GI issues these nutrients are critical to consume on a regular basis.
